Dear Marty,

You came into my life, about 10 years ago, at the Adobe Bridge, and I will be eternally grateful for that. You adopted me as your mentee and taught me everything I know about modern bridge bidding. You forgave my mistakes, and trusted me enough to make me a regular partner. You recruited me to the team that won a national championship.

I will cherish the memories of our times together at the bridge table, and away from it. And, as I play any bridge hand in the future, I'm sure you'll be watching from bridge heaven and wishing me well. I miss you!

My condolences To Marty"s Family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who had the priveledge of being in his presence. His kindness and gentle ways at the Bridge table made him a role modle extroidnaire! He was always willing to share his knowledge when asked but never commented when opponents made errors. Marty was, at first, a mystery at the bridge table. Quiet, formidable, maybe beyond reach but certainly a presence. I wasn’t quick to engage him, I wasn’t in his league. In time I came to know him not only as a top-flight bridge mind but as a deeply kind and generous human. On the rare occasion I made a good play, he wrote to compliment me. When partner and I had a good game, he wrote to congratulate us. He asked me for advice and thanked me for it. He leaves behind not just memories of brilliant play, but of a good man whose depth of spirit touched me. I miss you Marty and was fortunate to have come to know you. -Ron

Marty exuded a certain gravitas like no other. And it wasn't because of his Yankees t-shirt. He just had a quiet way about him, and when he spoke you listened. He was always willing to answer any question. We will miss him.

Marty has been a friend, partner and advisor for the 29 years I have lived in Tucson. He always had time to talk to you and give advice about bridge, or a medical question if he could. His death was a shock, even though he had been going downhill following his heart attack several years earlier. His death may have been a blessing as his quality of life would not have been good. My best wishes to Marcy who my wife and I have spent time with. Also to his daughter Kim who I know he loved and was very close to. Marty was a true gentleman and will be missed by all who knew him.

I was quite flattered when Marty first asked me to play with him, and our games were always enjoyable. Every game held a lesson or three. Getting to know Marty as a person was the real treat, however. We shared similar backgrounds (New York was where we each grew up), and conversations about NYC, the New York Yankees and more brought me back to a different time and a different place. I miss him very much.

Once you got Marty to 'chat' a bit - an amazing feat in and of itself - you found a charming, witty, lovely gentleman. His reputation as a world class bridge player and his ability to get right to the gist of a mistake made at the table, could be quite intimidating. One day after my terrible bid, he said something like "you're not supposed to put your partner in misery." I smiled at that one for weeks. A truly kind, generous, somewhat scary guy (ONLY at the table), Marty will be missed by all of us. My heartfelt condolences to his "other" family from all of us, his bridge family. Cayce

I've been fortunate to play with some very good bridge players, one of them Marty. Marty was not only an outstanding partner and team mate, but a genuinely wonderful person to be around. I have a few treatments I learned from Marty that will always remind me of him. I will miss our time spent talking about tennis, a game we both loved and played for many years. I am tearing up just writing this short piece about this soft-spoken lovely person! You will be sorely missed - RIP!!

Oh Marty! What an impact you had on my bridge game!! Thanks so much for guiding me and presenting new bids and methods to describe my holding. I appreciated how you shared just as much information as you thought I could absorb and let me know when I was ready for more you would have more than share. Marty was always so kind and helpful when I played against him and did something I should not have done, explaining what I should have done after the hand was over. He will leave such a big hole at Adobe.

For me I shall remember Marty’s incredible bridge mind & serious table demeanor. Away from the card play I will remember his wit & charm (yes charm!). He always made me welcome & l looked forward to his quiz questions after I played or defended a hand. Often I failed the quiz but always learnt something. My favorite time was when I declarered a 2NT against him & after the hand (which I made) he complimented my play. I left the table & the club that day walking on air & felt it was the equivalent of shaking the hand of an idol & never washing it again. And when we asked me to be on his 8 is Enuf team I was both flattered and & terrified but mostly pleased. You’ll be missed. I hope you find worthy bridge opponents in the next life. Penny

Dear Marty, Thank you for the help, guidance and time you shared with me. I am lucky to have been able to play with and against you and learn from you. I still remember the first time you called the director on me for taking too long to bid - I think I had about 20 master points at the time and was shaking in my boots. One day, when you were by the kitchen door at the club wearing your Yankees t-shirt and snacking on a pretzel, I told you that I wasn’t ready yet……but I would ask you to play down the road sometime, when I felt more ready. Without hesitation you said, sure thing and you would find a day for us to play. I learned so much from you each time we played - a true master of the game. You made the game look so easy as you bid, doubled, declared and defended without stressing, barely making a peep, and always in tempo. A few eye rolls every once in a while, just so we knew you were human :-) Playing with you was great and I will cherish those memories, but also the memories of the stories you shared will be remembered also. How you got into bridge, your time in the Army when you were stationed in the middle east! Not what you were expecting when you signed up. Meeting your wife Marcy, your daughter Kim working for the FAA and what a cool career, as well as your two grandsons and how proud you were of the young men they were becoming. Thank you Marty. I will miss seeing you at the Club and getting your advice. Every time I pick up Watson’s Play of the Hand, I will think of you and smile. Rest in peace friend. Debbie
